Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty or mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the appearance of the chin. It involves reshaping or augmenting the chin to achieve a more balanced facial profile or to correct certain aesthetic concerns. Chin augmentation can be performed using various techniques, including implants or bone repositioning.

  • Chin Implants: This is one of the most common methods of chin augmentation. During the procedure, an implant made of silicone or other biocompatible materials is placed over the existing chin bone to increase its projection or enhance its size. The implant is typically inserted through an incision made either inside the mouth (intraoral approach) or under the chin (submental approach). The surgeon selects an implant size and shape that best suits the patient's facial features and desired outcome.
  • Bone Repositioning: In cases where the chin deficiency is more severe or if there are functional issues such as malocclusion (misalignment of the teeth), the surgeon may perform genioplasty to reposition the chin bone. This involves making precise cuts in the chin bone (osteotomies) and repositioning it to achieve the desired projection or alignment. The bone may be moved forward, backward, or vertically as needed.
  • Filler Injections: For patients seeking a less invasive option or temporary enhancement, dermal fillers such as hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite can be injected into the chin to add volume and improve definition. While filler injections provide immediate results, they are temporary and typically last several months to a couple of years, depending on the type of filler used.
  • Fat Grafting: This involves harvesting fat from one area of the body (usually through liposuction), processing it, and then injecting it into the chin to augment its size and shape. Fat grafting can provide natural-looking results and has the added benefit of contouring the donor site.
