Nasal Bone Fractures

A nasal bone fracture refers to a break or crack in one or both of the bones that form the bridge of the nose. Nasal bone fractures are a common type of facial fracture and often occur due to trauma to the face, such as sports injuries, motor vehicle accidents, falls, or physical altercations. The nose is particularly vulnerable to injury because it protrudes from the face and lacks strong support from surrounding bones.

Symptoms of a nasal bone fracture may include:

  • Pain and tenderness around the nose.
  • Swelling and bruising, especially around the eyes and nose.
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose.
  • Nosebleeds.
  • Deformity or asymmetry of the nose, such as a crooked or flattened appearance.

In some cases, a nasal bone fracture may be associated with other facial injuries, such as fractures of the surrounding bones, including the septum (the cartilage that divides the nostrils) or the orbit (eye socket).
