Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body. It is not a weight loss method but rather a body contouring procedure aimed at improving the shape and proportion of the body by targeting localized areas of stubborn fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

  • Consultation: The process typically begins with a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. During this consultation, the surgeon will assess the patient's medical history, physical health, and aesthetic goals. They will also evaluate the areas of concern and discuss the expected outcomes of the procedure.
  • Preparation: Before the surgery, the patient will receive instructions on how to prepare, which may include adjustments to diet, medications, and lifestyle habits. Patients may also be asked to quit smoking, as smoking can interfere with the healing process.
  • Anesthesia: Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient's preferences. The surgeon will discuss anesthesia options with the patient during the consultation.
  • Incisions: Small incisions are made in the target area(s) where fat will be removed. The size and number of incisions depend on the amount of fat being removed and the specific technique used.
  • Tumescent technique: Before fat removal, a solution containing saline, lidocaine (a local anesthetic), and epinephrine (a vasoconstrictor) is injected into the target area(s). This solution helps numb the area, reduce bleeding, and facilitate fat removal.
  • Fat removal: The surgeon will use a thin tube called a cannula, which is attached to a suction device, to carefully remove excess fat from the target area(s). The cannula is inserted through the incisions and moved back and forth to break up and suction out the fat deposits.
  • Contouring: During the procedure, the surgeon will sculpt and shape the treated area(s) to achieve the desired contour and aesthetic outcome.
