Gynaecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males. It is commonly referred to as "man boobs" or "moobs." Gynecomastia can occur in one or both breasts and may result in tenderness or pain in the affected area. It can occur at any age but is most common during puberty and in older men.

  • Hormonal Imbalance: Fluctuations in hormone levels, specifically an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone, can lead to the development of gynecomastia. This imbalance can occur during puberty, as well as in older men due to factors such as aging, obesity, or certain medical conditions.
  • Medications: Certain medications can cause gynecomastia as a side effect. These may include anabolic steroids, anti-androgens, certain antidepressants, and some medications used to treat prostate cancer or heart conditions.
  • Health Conditions: Certain health conditions, such as hypogonadism (a condition where the body doesn't produce enough testosterone), liver disease, kidney failure, or thyroid disorders, can contribute to the development of gynecomastia.
  • Substance Abuse: The use of substances such as alcohol, marijuana, or certain illicit drugs can increase the risk of developing gynecomastia.

Treatment for gynecomastia depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. In many cases, gynecomastia may resolve on its own, especially if it is related to puberty or temporary hormonal fluctuations. However, if gynecomastia persists or causes significant discomfort, treatment options may include:

  • Medications: In some cases, medications such as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) or aromatase inhibitors may be prescribed to help reduce breast tissue or alleviate symptoms associated with gynecomastia.
  • Surgery: Surgical options for treating gynecomastia may include liposuction to remove excess fat or surgical excision to remove glandular tissue. Surgery is typically recommended for individuals with persistent gynecomastia that does not respond to other treatments or causes significant distress.
